Clinical Perfusion
Our team of highly skilled clinical perfusionists are part of the cardiac surgical team in both the Golden Jubilee University National Hospital and the Royal Hospital for Children, Glasgow.
They clinically manage patients while being supported on the heart lung bypass machine during most cardiac surgical operations. This facilitates the surgeon being able to operate on or inside the heart, while the rest of the body is perfused with blood and oxygen.
The clinical perfusionists are part of the multidisciplinary team involved in the care of patients undergoing:
- routine and complex cardiac surgery,
- cardiac transplantation,
- neonatal and paediatric cardiac surgery,
- complex congenital surgery,
- short term ventricular assist devices (VAD),
- long term left ventricular assist devices (LTLVAD) and
- extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO) therapy.
They are also involved in the training and education of device management to patients and their carers with long term left ventricular assist devices.
The team of clinical perfusionists provide out of hours on call cover to both the GJUNH and Royal Hospital for Children facilities.
