Heart (cardiac) Surgery
The Golden Jubilee National Hospital’s heart (cardiac) surgery department performs a wide range of procedures:
- Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG);
- Valve Surgery to repair or replace heart valves;
- Adult Congenital Cardiac Surgery procedures; and
- Other open heart surgical procedures.
Most of our patients are referred by cardiologists in local hospitals or from our clinical teams at the Golden Jubilee National Hospital.
Advice for patients who are experiencing deteriorating symptoms while awaiting surgery for Coronary Artery Disease and Valvular Heart Disease
If you require a hospital admission due to your deteriorating symptoms, your hospital cardiologist will manage your condition by either changing or altering your current medication.
Your case will be discussed with the team at the Golden Jubilee National Hospital, and if necessary, you will receive urgent inpatient surgery.

Advice for patients awaiting Coronary Artery Bypass Graft (CABG)
Call your GP if you have:
- Increasing chest pain
- Shortness of breath
Call NHS 111 if you have:
- Chest pain with a longer duration
- Chest pain which is severe
- Chest pain when at rest or carrying out minimal activity
Call 999 if you have:
- Prolonged chest pain for more than 20 minutes which does not respond to Glyceryl Tri Nitrate (GTN) spray
Advice for patients awaiting heart valve surgery
Call your GP if you are having more:
- Palpitations
- Shortness of breath
- Leg and/or feet swelling
- Fatigue
Call NHS 111 if you:
- Cannot lie flat due to difficulty breathing
- Are waking up gasping for air
- Are fainting / passing out
- Have blood-stained sputum / phlegm
